With poor maintenance of the contact lenses you risk the health of the eyes, and even though contact lenses are relatively safe, yet people rarely adhere to the prescribed rules. Wearing lenses for a longer period than anticipated or in not cleaning them properly, can lead to serious consequences.
Occurrence of keratitis
- Insufficient care of the lenses can lead to keratitis, which occurs when bacteria find their way to reach your cornea.
- A million cases of keratitis are annually diagnosed and although still easily treated, should immediately seek medical help.
- Improper treatment can result in complete loss of vision.
How to avoid infections?
If keratitis sounds ominous, it does not mean you should immediately take the lenses in the trash, because you can avoid eye infections very easy. All you need to do is follow the instructions on what to do with your contact lenses:
– Remove them before sleeping, showering or swimming.
– Regularly change them (how often depends on the lenses).
– Always wash your hands before and after touching the lenses.
Although these tips are simple, however, they are often neglected and later we regret not following them.
