Simply gulping several ounces of water before bed may not have a positive impact on weight loss, but drinking water as part of a regular exercise program can help you lose weight.

In 2010, a Ph.D. candidate at Virginia Tech University determined that replacing caloric beverages with water decreased the total amount of calories and sugars that the older population in her study consumed daily, thus fueling weight loss. Losing weight is a product of proper diet and exercise, which means you need to make a concerted effort to alter your habits to effectively lose weight. Drinking water instead of sugary drinks will ultimately increase your energy level and improve your overall well-being.

Clinical trials have confirmed the effectiveness of drinking water on appetite control. In 2010, the American Chemical Society determined that drinking sufficient water before eating can be an efficient weight-loss strategy. The study included 48 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 that were split into two groups. The trial required participants to eat a low-calorie diet over 12 weeks. One group drank 2 cups of water before each meal and the other did not. In conclusion, water drinkers lost 15.5 pounds over the course of the study, in comparison to participants in the control group, who lost 11 pounds.

Water is involved in all cellular processes that occur in the body, which means you need to stay hydrated to function at a high level. Drinking a small amount of water before bed can help keep you hydrated while you sleep, even though the body requires a lesser amount of fluid to operate during rest. WebMD states that staying hydrated has a positive effect on boosting your metabolism and recommends drinking at least 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. Drink most of your water throughout the course of the day so you don't wake up to urinate.

Water is a component of proper dieting but is not a direct way to burn fat. The benefits of drinking water are vast; for example, you may mistake thirst for hunger, and staying properly hydrated can result in eating less overall.
